Our Story
Alan Joyce started in the painting industry in 1988, working for a production painting company where he learned the fundamentals of the trade. From 1995 to 1999, he worked for custom home painting companies, mastering the craft of high-end residential work and developing an eye for detail that would become the foundation of his own business.
In 1999, Alan passed the California C-33 contractors license exam and founded A&J Painting Inc. in Berkeley. Three years later, in 2002, he became Lead Certified, ensuring compliance with EPA regulations for working on pre-1978 homes. Today, with 37 years of industry experience and 26 years as A&J Painting Inc., Alan continues to lead every project personally, bringing together production pace with custom quality.
We have maintained our Berkeley location at 901 Page Street and our commitment to the local community throughout our entire history. Our service area includes Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, Richmond, Hercules, El Sobrante, Pinole, Emeryville, Piedmont, and Montclair. We are licensed, bonded, and insured, and we take pride in being part of the East Bay community.
Meet Alan Joyce, Owner
Alan Joyce is a hands-on owner who is present on every A&J Painting project. He started young in the industry, learning from the ground up through production work and eventually specializing in custom home painting. After passing his C-33 license exam in 1999, he built A&J Painting Inc. on a foundation of quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and transparent communication.
Alan's philosophy is simple: production pace with custom quality. This means delivering the precision and personalization clients expect from high-end painters while maintaining efficient timelines that respect your schedule. He personally oversees quality control on every job, ensuring that proper surface preparation, expert color consultation, and skilled application are never compromised.
We acknowledge that we are not the most economical painting company in the industry. However, we will not sacrifice the attention to detail and unwillingness to cut corners in the painting process. Our work reflects Alan's belief that premium results come from proper preparation, quality materials, and experienced craftsmanship. We use Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, and Dunn-Edwards products, with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint as our preferred choice for its durability and finish quality.
